Atascosa County Judge’s Report

We had a terrific Atascosa Day at the Texas State Capital last Tuesday. It was one of the biggest citizen turnouts since we started (last time we had high school bands, so we had a lot of students and parents also). It was a very respectable turnout. We had officials from several cities, board members from the Atascosa County Historical Commission and some non – elected, non – appointed citizens who were very much appreciated. The Atascosa County Auditor and all four Commissioners were there. Representative Guillen graciously provided breakfast on arrival and Senator Flores graciously provided lunch. Both the senate and the house through the sponsorship of our officials honored J. Taylor Brite for his service and many of his family members were there. All in all, a good day for Atascosa County. One more thing on my mind…. I write a lot about our County Animal Control and saving all the animals we can, and am very sincere about that. But, I do not want to be remiss and not state that the main reason, for me, is the safety of our citizens. A couple of years ago a citizen was attacked by a pack of roaming dogs in one of our cities and it took a few hundred stitches to repair them. It was horrible and there was no remediation for such an event. We have that remediation available now with the official establishment of the County facility and its staff. I have said before that the county cannot intervene in a city’s animal control business but there is this exception. If a person is attacked we (the county and our licensed law enforcement a.c. officers) have the legal right to render aid, and subdue the attacking animal or animals. The A.C. facility is for the safety and protection of the citizens of Atascosa County with a very humane attitude about saving all the animals it can.
