Atascosa County Judge’s Report

Because of the opening of the Justice Center and its courts, we have an opportunity to reorganize and streamline the court booking system in the old courthouse. In the new Justice Center, we have designated two courtrooms for the primary use by District Court and County Court At Law Court. That leaves CPS, AG, Juvenile, County (mine), specialty settings (which includes a wide variety), and visiting judge settings. So, to handle all of this we will need to coordinate scheduling with three physical court rooms for these.

To add real support to this, Judges Ellison, Wilson and Brendel have offered their unused capacity for special settings. As you know, sometimes these courts can have an extended trial which can take a week or two. And, the district judges have to cover court in five counties. Sometimes they may have dockets that only take a couple of days. At any rate, their contribution and support is a big help!

My office will be the primary coordination point for booking these courts. It is my goal to have an organized and calm system that considers every judges’ office request fairly and with respect. Truly, the courtroom shortage until now has created a real state of confusion concerning who is using what court. We have a chance to make all of this work better and improve court production to provide justice in our county.

I am so fortunate to be involved with such a fine group of judges and their staffs. We will not be perfect as we create a new system, but we will try hard to do a good job. Any reader access links from it to the District Court website with their calendar and County Court At Law with their calendar. Our new calendar will be a link under County Judge. Check it out. This is a huge function of your county’s responsibilities and I want you know what we are doing.

Thank you for listening.

We want you to be proud of your county government.
