Atascosa County Judge’s Report

I am so pleased that early voting has gone so well. This morning, the turnout was 23% of registered voters and that is huge for a non-presidential year. The percentage of voters opting to use the new digital/hybrid/paper ballot system is still tracking at over 70%. In the past, we were usually at 50% electronic or less. The interesting thing to me is that every person I have asked that used the new system loved it! (I am writing this on Friday the 2nd) This is great news because if the smooth transition to the new system continues through the 6th, we will have the wind in our sails going into 2020 to go to “countywide” balloting.

I do understand we are putting you through a lot of changes, but by 2020 all our voters will be using the same equipment and it will stay the same for years. Our last electronic equipment lasted close to 20 years. Electronics change so much that I have asked and been told that this equipment is software upgradable and piece replaceable. We can also add to it in the future and it will be compatible. I am hopeful we will make it easier and easier

I am also thankful my wife liked the new equipment because she has always voted paper and sort of threatened me if she did not like it. I won’t say what she threatened me with, but I have her enthusiastic approval (PHEW!!!).

Ps. I have been behaving. I got the voting information from our IT manager, who can now bring it up online in the courthouse office. (Technology is so amazing to us old people!) So, I have not been inside any 100 ft marker. I have seen one candidate constantly “loitering” on the sidewalk outside the early voting office. Just a parting note for those “nattering nabobs of negativism” out there.

Thanks for listening.

We want you to be proud of your County Government.
