This week I had two sessions with Juvenile Court and a regular meeting of Commissioner’s Court. In our next regular Commissioner’s Court, we will be reorganizing the “Atascosa County Child Welfare Board” with Jessica Tom as Chairperson. Jessica is a mighty fine individual who works on the Family Crisis Center Board and others. I am excited about the possibilities for programs we can develop through this board for children at risk in our county.
I also made it to a county judge roundtable training session in Hondo sponsored by Medina County Judge Chris Schuchart. We had the County Judges there from Dimmit – Judge Ponce; Real – Judge Sansom; McMullen – Judge Teal; Bandera – Judge Evans; Frio – Judge Luna; Medina – Judge Schuchart and myself. We covered new rules for assigning fines in court to indigents, new rules for bonding arrestees, the new bill SB42 which orders the counties to develop courthouse security plans (we spent a lot of time on this one), and mental health reporting when magistrating prisoners. There is also a time set aside to discuss issues by each Judge and that may be the best part because we learn from each other. Or, I might say, I learn from the other Judges.
We are tentatively planning to open, in November, a second early voting station at JP2 in the NW quadrant of the County. This will achieve two things: 1. Lessen the burden on the early voting in Jourdanton, and 2. Make early voting much easier for the fast-growing NW part of the county.
Thanks for listening.
We want you to be proud of your County Government.
