Atascosa County Judge’s Report

I was mistaken in my last column when I wrote that Mark Gillespie will finish out Lon Gillespie’s term.  The actual law on that is that he must file this December to run next year and stand for election in the 2018 primary and general election. To keep the commissioner’s elections in cycle the position will be up again in the 2020 primary and general election cycle.   My father always said that “the only people not making mistakes were the ones not working.”  So, there is some solace in that.  I am something of a workaholic so I make mistakes every day.  The only thing I can promise I will do, is to do my best to acknowledge my mistakes and fix them. Honesty is always the best policy.

Also, I will be filing this December to run again next year to continue as your county judge.  I can’t believe time has gone by this fast.

Our new Commissioner, Mark Gillespie is getting off to a good start.  He seems to have the right mix of humility and an eagerness to do well.  He has been riding with his Precinct foreman looking at roads, spending time visiting with various county department heads to learn all he can, including with me.  I am impressed with his intelligence and the knowledge he already carries about county and precinct operations.

I just attended the Texas Judges and Commissioners Conference in Corpus and got the maximum judicial hours I could there.  I will be going to Beeville later this month for a one day judicial seminar.  I went to Corpus with Commissioner Carroll and found the classes worthwhile.  They have many vendors there in the exhibit area and that is educational, too.  It was a profitable time to learn.

Thanks for listening.

We want you to be proud of your County Government.
