Atascosa County Judge’s Report

I have started a “Hero Businesses of Atascosa County” list. This is to be a list of businesses that put your safety and their employee’s safety first and follow all the Governor’s orders. They require their employees and all customers to wear masks. They also require social distancing, and where appropriate, mark off social distancing for their customers and workers. Of course, there are many circumstances where the mask is off such as in restaurants when you are eating or drinking. Amazingly, I had one person post on Facebook that I was a communist for trying to promote support of the Governor’s good public health measures.

I am so encouraged by the businesses and individuals that respect protecting their own health and those around them. Of course, I hate wearing a mask. I will be so glad when we return to normal. I miss shaking hands and hugging. This is truly an unpleasant time we are going through. But I think if we hang tough, together we can, in the near future, start seeing a light at the end of the tunnel on this horrible virus.

I respect the antimaskers who hate them. I do, too. But if you study history you will see that it is established law that the government has the right to set guidelines to protect its citizens from infection. During the great outbreak of tuberculosis in the 1940s people were even locked in TB Hospitals to control the disease from expanding further. Even during the great “Spanish Flu” outbreak of 1918-1920 public health measures were invoked. I also believe that government should be prudent and not overzealous in its application. I agree with the person who said that our constitutional right to swing our arms stop at the other person’s nose. The right to free speech stops at doing others harm, such as shouting “Fire” in a crowded theater where there is no fire. Our constitutional rights are limited from spreading infectious diseases to others with such examples as STDs and tuberculosis. We must work together to succeed.
