Atascosa County Judge’s Report

As the 2021 budget season arrives, I wanted citizens to know I have been a fiscal conservative all of my adult life. I manage my personal finances very carefully and have always maintained an excellent credit record, even during tough times. When running the NAPA Houston region in the 80s, I doubled the sales in 10 years and tripled the profits. I applied these same principles to small business when I moved home.

As I grew older, I aligned myself with the conservatism of Goldwater and Reagan. Now, I do not agree with everything they believed in. I am not a robot. I am a free thinker who makes my own decisions which I hope are “thoughtfully and intelligently” done. I am willing to listen to all opinions, and then to make up my own mind. This past Monday was Memorial Day so I thought for my quote this week, I would tell you about Lt. Col. Stephen Wilson who was captured at the fall of Corregidor (WWII), and suffered mightily in his captivity. He tells the story of one night, during the death march, when thousands of prisoners were packed tightly into a tin, stifling and windowless warehouse “in a standing position so that when a man passed out, he couldn’t fall and when he died, they remained standing.” In the 10 hours he was stuck there, all he could think of was air, green trees, sunlight and especially water.

When people complained that the nation was going to blazes, the retired General would encourage a different perspective by saying, “Well, you’ve got water to drink and good food to eat, and nobody’s kicking your wife and kids around; you’re free, aren’t you? And if you don’t like what someone says, you can say so, can’t you? Listen, you’ve never had it so good.”

Thanks for listening.

God bless our veterans and their sacrifice.

We want you to be proud of your County Government.
