A rumor that some Commissioners and I keep hearing is that when we considered the budget of the Juvenile is this, “They are thinking about closing it and releasing all of those errant juveniles into the community leaving the community unprotected.” Wherever that came from is a giant load of “bull.” First, we rarely have more than four to six Atascosa Co. juveniles in the facility at any point in time. Secondly, I had made backup arrangements (for emergency placement) well in advance of the special meeting in case the Commissioners decided to defund it. The goal never was to close it but seek fiscal responsibility. We did come up with an interim plan to keep it open next year. I am working on future planning to make it more affordable. On another disturbing note: because it is an ongoing investigation, I must be careful what I say about the “dog dumping” issue. However, I want to say a few things here (I don’t post county business on anybody’s Facebook page including my own) that there have been no county tax dollars spent on animal transport as alleged often on many Facebook posts. I started, with Commissioner’s Court approval, a 501c3 non-profit corporation that takes donations for transport. Many good people have donated to this fund. I have given to it also. And it is this fund out of which we have paid various transport people, including the one under investigation. When our investigation is concluded I will let you know what the county is going to do. I assure you that if there is adequate evidence of wrongdoing against this county and the animals whose lives we were trying to save, I will do my best to see that we take appropriate action.

Thank you for listening. We want you to be proud of your county government.
