Last Wednesday I went to a meeting in Campbellton to inform the local county residents about the new animal control for Atascosa County that should be open by the end of March. Lt. Henry Dominquez held the meeting and Commissioner Carroll and I attended. The Campbellton area folks are some of the nicest around. They were great to be with.
Our next meeting is going to be next month in Leming. Watch the Atascosa Animal Control’s Facebook for information. Any Atascosa County resident is invited. We will not be having meetings in the incorporated cities. Any contact will be done properly through the city councils. We will be busy in January and February passing an Animal Control Regulation which will become law the day the facility opens. We will be offering interlocal service agreements to the incorporated cities during this time.
Our first focus and priority will be the unincorporated county areas and then Poteet, Charlotte and Christine. We cannot, by law, be involved in routine animal control in an incorporated city. All we can do is contract with them to use the county’s animal control facility for placement of dogs or cats. It will be up to the cities if they want to use our facility. But, it will have to be by our operating rules. Our rules will be modeled after other counties who have been doing the same thing for years.
On Friday, the Dec. 15 the Juvenile Board voted to offer the “Interim” Chief Juvenile Probation Officer job to Bill Gamez, a longtime employee and Juvenile Probation Officer for us. This will be a six (6) month position after which we hope to have a “permanent” Chief JPO. Bill Gamez accepted the position and will start officially on January 1.
I want to wish each and every citizen a blessed and happy Christmas. This time of the year is a great time to enjoy family and to remember those who are no longer with us. So, it can be a happy and poignant time. Be sure to value the time with every family member and friend. We never know when our time is up.
Finally, remember the Reason For The Season – Our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Thanks for listening.
We want you to be proud of your County Government.
