On August 5, 2016 the Atascosa 4-H held their annual Awards Banquet. This banquet honors those 4-H members that have participated in County, District 12 and State events as well as those who have submitted Recordbooks. This years honored guests included Commissioner Lonnie Gillespie, his wife who is also the President of the Atascosa County Extension Education Association, Inc., Debbie Gillespie; Double Trouble Prospect Show donors Burton and Mildred Meyer, Kathryn Ann Kurtz, Peggy Meyer, Brush Country Real Estate, Open Heart Ranchs Shirley Womble, Ronnie and Lynn Rankin, John and Barbara Chessher and Texas Farm Bureaus Ross Nieschwitz. Many of our former Father, Mother and Friend of the year awardees attend even though their children may be long gone from 4-H such as Jimmy Meyer, Randy and Linda Ramey, Ronnie Rankin, Melissa Wiegang, Shirley Stevens, Mariana Weigang and Abel Casas. Quite often these former 4-H volunteers are still active donors or help the children with projects that have stayed dear to their hearts.
This year the 4-H Mother of the Year was Debbie Ward and the 4-H Father of the Year was Sean Chessher. The 4-H Friend of the Year was Jay Korus in recognition of the countless hours he has devoted to the 4-H Goat Program. These men and women are nominated chosen by the 4-H members themselves. All of the 4-H clubs were represented and a fine meal catered by Bill Miller was served. Katie Bonner Talley, a 4-H Alumni, was introduced by her brother Travis Bonner of Lytle 4-H and spoke to the members about taking a leap of faith and trying things for the first time.
