Good Luck at District 4-H Roundup Livestock Judging

Getting about the Right Time to Broadcast Spray Mesquite

With temperatures beginning to warm up many individuals start thinking about broadcast spraying Mesquite.

Those that want to do this should wait till the soil temperature is 75 degrees and preferably warmer than 80 degrees at the 12 to 18 inch depth. We should be getting close to this level if we are not already there. This temperature is important because it influences the translocation of carbohydrates that affects herbicide absorption in the plant. With the soil temperature changing you should also see a change in the color of the Foliage on the Mesquite leaf.

When mesquite leaves first appear the growth comes out dull yellow and then turns to a darker green in color. At the point that the leaves turn from the dull green to the dark green is the time in which you want to spray with a Broadcast application. Once the mesquite leaves are all dark green they are ready to be sprayed. The longer you wait after the leaves turn green the less efficacy your herbicide will have to control the plant due to the thick waxy layer that builds up on the plant.

The Extension Brush Buster Broadcast Leaf Mix Spray Method includes ½ percent of reclaim ½ percent of remedy ¼ part surfactant and ¼ to ½ percent of Hi Light Blue Dye. Please follow all label directions when using herbicides and take all necessary precautions.

For more information on controlling brush please contact the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office of Atascosa County.
