A father and son are dead after what Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward said is an apparent murder-suicide.
At 10:49 p.m. last Wednesday night, sheriff’s office dispatchers received a call from a family member that discovered the two men at their residence in the 4000 block of FM 476 west of Poteet.
Sheriff’s investigators believe the shooting of the 21 year old son occurred about 1:15 p.m. during an argument with his father. Another family member received a text message from the father who stated he had shot the son during an altercation. When a family member from out of town arrived to check on the pair, he forced his way into the house and found the father and son deceased. Deputies were told there had been a history of disagreements between the pair.
Sheriff Soward stated both victims had gunshot wounds and evidence supported a murder-suicide, but it is under investigation by the sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division.
Sheriff Soward identified the father as Rafael Juan Ruiz, age 59, of Poteet and John Oliver Serros, age 21, of San Antonio. An autopsy was ordered on both victims by Justice of the Peace Kyle Bradley.
Sergeant Investigator Robert Newman is heading up the investigation.
