I’m sure your Facebook feeds have been filled with celebrities and friends alike with the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. I know mine is.

So what is ALS? I checked out the ALS Association to get a better idea . The site describes Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) as a “progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.” Patients in the latter stages of the disease could become paralyzed. It was formerly known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” when the baseball player gave it national exposure in 1939 which ended his baseball career.

So why not help out? Sports Editor Chris Filoteo had the idea that we should donate and participate. Chris, my son Gavin and I took it on right outside the office. Cold is an understatement. I had ice stuck to my hair. Invigorating as it was, I’m glad it was for a good cause because I have no plans to do that again. We called out the coaching staffs of Pleasanton, Jourdanton, Poteet and Charlotte who all answered the call and made challenges of their own. You can see our video along with Pleasanton, Jourdanton, Poteet and Charlotte coaches via our YouTube channel (ThePE1909), on our Facebook page or Twitter @PE1909. We also called out our good friend Eric Smith of the Devine News. We’re looking forward to his video.

On that note we challenge Atascosa County as a whole! We wanna see your Ice Bucket Challenge. Post to our Facebook page or Tweet it at us! Let’s see what this community can do. Be sure to use #ALSIceBucketChallenge when posting. Whether you do the challenge or not visit alsa.org to donate.
