Aggies look to add to historic season

Coming off a win against Randolph, Poteet looks to make history for the second week in a row.

The Aggies (9-1, 6-0) will kick off at 7 p.m. against Luling (2-7, 1-4) at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio.
With a 40-23 win against Randolph, Poteet won their first outright district title since 2005. However, it was their first undefeated district title since 1958, the same year they won their last playoff game.

Senior Ernest Davila has led the way offensively. The running back surpassed 2,000 rushing yards in back to back seasons. At the time of publication, he is currently 10th in the nation in rushing and second in the state of Texas. In total, he has run the ball 224 times for a total of 2410 yards and 28 touchdowns.

In addition to Davila, the offense has utilized multiple players. Senior Martin Ibarra has been a playmaker on both sides of the ball. Ibarra leads the receiving core with 44 receptions for 851 yards and six touchdowns. Ibarra also has two interceptions on the season, including the game-sealing interception against crosstown rival Jourdanton.

Though Poteet has been a run first team, they’ve managed to open up the passing game this season. Junior Alexander Lockamy has thrown for 1488 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Defensively, Poteet hasn’t given up more than 30 points all season. Head Coach Darby House said the success of the team has been led by them. Senior Julian Moya leads the team with 101 tackles on the season. The all-district linebacker has been effective on the rush defense throughout the season along with Senior Jonathan Guzman. Guzman leads the team in sacks with six.

The 1958 Poteet Aggies team defeated Schertz-Cibolo 26-18. It wasn’t until 2000 that the Aggies returned to the playoffs. Since then, they’ve qualified for the playoffs nine times. Their closest game was in 2005 when they fell to Llano 27-20. Despite leading early, Poteet fell to Blanco 35-20 in the bi-district round last season. Coming into the season, Poteet was ranked No. 21 by Dave Campbell’s and has lived up to their expectations this season.
