The Poteet Aggies turned the page on their cross-county rival, the Pleasanton Eagles.

On Friday, Poteet beat Pleasanton 16-3. It was the first time the two have played in five years and the first time Poteet has beaten Pleasanton since 2009.

“You know this is a long time coming here. It didn’t really matter who our opponents were,” said Head Coach Darby House. “We’re gonna get after it and our kids were going hard defensively.”

House said the defense was going to be key in this game. The Aggies held Pleasanton to 120 yards of total offense.

“I’ve said it all along, they’re going to be our anchor and they showed it today they kept us in it the whole game,” House said. “Then, offensively at the end, we finally wore them down.”

In the first quarter the Aggies moved the ball down field and were in the red zone of Pleasanton, but two costly drops in the end zone by Diego Puente and Darrin Garcia caused the Aggies to go for three. Sophomore Nathaniel Herrera converted a 33-yard field goal, the first of his career.

The three points would be the only points until the third quarter.

Ramos overthrew four passes in the first half. His passes were erratic all night long. He would finish the night 8-of-29 passing for 41 yards with one interception.

“We were flushed, a couple of times and then a couple of balls were overthrown,” said Pleasanton Head Coach Stephen Liska. “Timing, we’ve got to work on and got to get better at it.”

He said it was ugly early on and it seemed like every time the Eagles would get a drive going the team would get a penalty.

“Poteet played a good game and hats off to them. Our kids got after and played hard on defense and offense,” Liska said.

In the third quarter, with 10:05 left, the ball was snapped over the punter’s head, which led to Pleasanton’s lone points on a 30-yard field goal by Jose Angel Perez.

Julian Moya was all over the field for Poteet at the linebacker position, racking up six tackles. He was the spark plug the Aggies needed on offense as well, picking up 48 rushing yards and the go-ahead touchdown on three carries.

The linebacker made the biggest play of the game with a 28-yard run to Pleasanton’s 4-yard line. Two plays later, he punched his way into the endzone from four yards out to give Poteet a 9-3 lead.

“It meant a lot. I think that’s what got the momentum going,” Moya said. “That’s what got us up and we pushed harder in that fourth quarter.”

Moya said he has been wanting to get the ball and that play has been sitting in the playbook. He added that the win meant a lot to him.

“I mean they’re only like eight minutes away. We know each other and it’s always been a rivalry,” Moya said.

With five minutes left in the game, Pleasanton had the ball inside of their own 10-yard line and a bobbled pass found the Aggies hands.

The Aggies would score two plays later on the legs of junior running back Ernest Davila to go up 16-3. Pleasanton got the ball back, but were unable to score.

Davila was at a loss of words after the rivalry win.

“We have been waiting for that for 10 years. It felt so good,” Davila said. “We finally got down to it and we took care of business.”

Poteet is 2-0 for the first time since 2005 and Pleasanton is 0-2 for the first time since 2006.

Poteet will travel to Carrizo Springs in week two while Pleasanton will face No. 8-ranked Jourdanton (1-1).
