The following report was given to us by Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward:
We received a call shortly before 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19 from land surveyors on East Gates Valley Rd., three miles north of Poteet, that had located a “suspicious package” near the county road.
Responding deputies found a large trash bag across the fence in a pasture that contained human skeletal remains. Deputies found additional bones in the area that were believed to be scattered by wild animals.
We believe the remains have been there for at least a year, quite possibly longer. Pct. 2 J.P. Kyle Bradley ordered an autopsy.
Responding ACSO officers were Sheriff David Soward, Captain Matt Miller, Sgt. Investigator Robert Newman, Sgt. Investigator Albert Garza, Sgt./Deputy Joe Saucedo, Deputy Sheriff Ronald Sanchez Jr. and Deputy Sheriff Benny Lopez.
We don’t know at this time if it’s a male or female or how they were killed. The case is being treated as a homicide investigation.
Sheriff’s investigators will be working diligently in the next few days with the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office in attempt to identify the victim.
