Accident causes death of Jourdanton man

Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward stated his criminal investigation division is investigating the tragic death of a 45 year old Jourdanton man. The sheriff stated the incident occurred Saturday evening around 9:00 p.m. in the 5000 block of FM 1332 in the LaParita community. The victim was transported to South Texas Regional Medical Center by private vehicle where the victim and his girlfriend both told emergency room personnel that the victim had fallen off a ladder. The victim was transferred later that night to San Antonio Military Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery. Doctors discovered multiple internal injures and determined that they were not consistent with injuries from a fall off of a ladder.

The Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office was not notified of the incident until late Sunday afternoon. Chief Investigator Jake Guerra initiated an investigation and Lieutenant Investigator Wayne Sratton was assigned to the case. Stratton along with Sergeant Investigators Max Peralta and Jesse Martinez and Texas Ranger Shane Staley fanned out to locate witnesses and sort out the facts. By early Monday morning the team of investigators had located and interviewed several witnesses and met with medical personnel. Later Monday morning the victim, Donald “Donny” Horelka of Jourdanton passed away at the hospital in San Antonio.

Sheriff Soward stated that the investigation is still ongoing but at this time officers have not found any evidence that the incident was intentional. The injuries occurred during a domestic disturbance at Horelka’s home when he apparently tried to hang on to a truck in which his girlfriend was driving off in while she was attempting to leave the residence.

“To say anymore at this time would be premature until our investigation is completed and we consult with the District Attorney’s Office but at this time we do not anticipate any charges being filed”, the Sheriff stated.
