A sports week full of excitementFree Access

I had a feeling this past week was going to be exciting as far as sports was concerned and I was right. The only negative was that not all of our favorite teams won like we would have liked.

When the Pleasanton Eagles ran into a buzzsaw in the King Brahmas Friday night, I knew it was going to be a long week.

For those of you who didn’t see the unbeaten Eagles lose to the Brahmas, 33-32 in Kingsville, it was a game that is hard to figure or explain. To put it simply, the Brahmas came out running the ball and made it work. They had a quarterback with great speed and when he ran the option and kept the ball he was very effective, especially when he turned the corner and got into the clear. Defensively, the Eagles played their worst game of the season. They just couldn’t wrap up and tackle when they needed to.

The Eagles played their typical game on offense of passing the ball and when a team scores 32 points and the quarterback connects for five touchdowns, they should win the game. The mystery is how the Eagles could play a full third quarter and not score a point. That’s what happened and before they knew it they were too far behind.

Even then, the Eagles managed to score three touchdowns in the final quarter only to miss a crucial extra point.

The Oklahoma Sooners looked very much like the Pleasanton Eagles in losing to the Texas Longhorns 48-45 Saturday afternoon. This was also a seesaw battle in which the Longhorns dominated for most of the game and led 45-27 after three quarters, then saw the Sooners roar back with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to tie and force overtime.

With all of the Longhorn faithful holding their breath, a freshman kicker named Cameron Dicker cooly kicked a 40-yard field goal to win the game for Texas.

The only negative in this game was that my boss, the late Bill Wilkerson, was not around to see it. Bill was the consummate Longhorn fan. Whenever the Horns beat Texas A&M or Oklahoma in any sport, he’d be so happy he would declare a holiday here at the office.

The weekend game with the most controversy had to be the Dallas Cowboy game that saw them lose to the Houston Texans, 19- 16 in overtime. This game also went to the wire and catching much heat after it was over was Dallas coach Jason Garrett, who decided to punt the ball from the Houston 42 instead of going for it on a fourth-and-1 in overtime. After the punt, the Texans were able to march down the field and score the winning 36- yard field goal.

Coaching the Dallas Cowboys is not easy, especially when you work for Jerry Jones.

If there is a feel-good team for us to root for, it’s the Houston Astros. The defending World Series champions just swept the Cleveland Indians in three straight of their best-offive playoff series and are getting ready to play the Boston Red Sox for the American League’s championship starting Saturday.
