Jourdanton Police Investigators arrested Erwin Cook, age 21 of Jourdanton, on Monday, February 23 .
This case stemmed from information that police received regarding severe injuries to a 9-month-old female over the weekend.
He was charged with the offense of “Injury to a Child (with Intent to Cause Serious Bodily Injury)” a 1st Degree Felony. The 9-month-old baby girl’s identity is not revealed.
Cook is the baby’s father and was caring for her at their home on Sunday when the alleged incident occurred. Investigators said Cook admitted that he was impatient with the cries of the infant and became physical trying to quiet her. When the baby became unresponsive, he called her mother and they took the baby to South Texas Regional Medical Center’s emergency room. She was later admitted to University Hospital in San Antonio.
According to Jourdanton Police Chief Eric Kaiser, the baby is stable, although she has a fractured skull, brain hemorrhage and bruises to the face and ear area. X-rays have also revealed there are older head injuries, consistent with violent strikes to the head and face. “CPS is also investigating the case and taking precautions to protect any siblings,” said Kaiser.
Cook was magistrated in Jourdanton and booked into the Atascosa County Jail on a $150,000 bond. If convicted, he faces a possible punishment of 5-99 years in state prison.
Chief Kaiser complimented his team for their diligent work investigating this incident and locating and apprehending the suspect.
