Seth Dumas, of the Pleasanton FFA, placed 7th overall in the Senior Prepared Public Speaking Contest at the 80th Annual Texas FFA State Convention on July 16, 2008. After competing in the State Semi-Finals on July 14, he advanced to the State Finals, which were held on July 15. The results were announced during the Awards session at the convention on July 16. Seth will be a senior at Pleasanton High School and is the Pleasanton FFA Chapter President.

The youth of St. John Lutheran Church and First United Methodist Church did a great job of helping to beautify the landscape at the Pleasanton Public Library.

The Jourdanton Tigers finished in first place of the Pee Wee Divisions of the Jourdanton Little League this past season. Ini front, left to right, are Cheyenne Berry, Paul Parsons, Jonathon Casas, Mark Dillard, Forrest King, Tyler Korus and Joey Domez. In the middle row are Jeff Forrest, Randall Loy, Samantha Foulds, Mathew Harlan, Katy Schuchart, Jon Forrest and Sarah King.

A group of students from France had the opportunity to visit the USA through the Nacel Open Door Student Exchange. Teens staying with host families are, left to right, Delphine Jolly, Anne Aubert, Clement Bouteille and Marc Doman.

Five Atascosa countians carried away top prizes in HEB’s Customer Appreciation promotion now underway. Mary Chambless, HEB Representative, left congratulates the winners (left to right) Patty Paul who won the camcorder; Estelle McBee, winner of a radio cassette recorder; Lillian Brown, winner of the space saver TV and radio; Minnie Guzman, winner of a Sony TV; Maria Salazar, who took home a battery operated car; and Roger Castillo, whose sons will no doubt enjoy the star scope that dad won.

Jourdanton State Bank foundation was poured last week the easy way as Roma Construction Company, general contractors for the new bank building, had huge cement pumps on the job. They poured and finished 450 yards of cement in less than five hours.

Top Golfers – These two outstanding young golfers captured top honors in the first flight of the ACRA junior golf championship.  Kevin Farrer, left, nipped John Freeman, 154 to 157 for 36 holes. Both are members of the PHS golf team.

50 years ago

11-year-old Kim, is the only Atascosa county 4-H club member who qualified to participate in the state 4-H rodeo coming up Aug 8-10. Tiny Kim, a slim, brow-eyed blonde, who is a sixth grader in Poteet elementary school, is the daughter of  Mr. and Mrs. Jess Oliphant and comes by rodeoing naturally. Her older sister. Miss Linda Fluitt, and her brother, Leonard Fluitt, both contended in rodeos before Kim was old enough to participate.

60 years ago

Sandy Steinle is one of the standouts in the Jourdanton Little League whose All-Stars clash with Pleasanton Monday and Tuesday nights. Sandy is a catcher packing a hefty .628 batting average. As a member of the title-winning Yankees, he walloped five home runs.
