Chase Phillips competed in the Frio County 4-H Big Blast shotgun Shoot on Saturday, July 5th. There were over 150 4-H members competing in Trap, Skeet, 5 Stand, and sporting clays this shoot. Chase placed 6th in the Skeet Shooting competition. This was Chase’s first time to compete in an organized shotgun shoot! Chase is a member of the Atascosa 4-H shotgun Shooting program.

Two Jourdanton High School teachers made a presentation in Las Vegas this spring at the invitation of the National Science Teachers Association (NTSA) national convention. Ken J. Davis and Paul W. Wilson led a seminar describing the course that they created and team-taught at Jourdanton High School: The Natural and Social Science of Water.

Jennifer Herrera, a former Pleasanton school teacher and disabled Air Force veteran competed in the 18th National Wheelchair Games in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and brought home three gold medals and a bronze.

Learn to Buckle Up – When Atascosa 4C’s bus driver Al Delgado recognized the need DPS Trooper, Allan Kempf, was called in to stress the importance of wearing seatbelts. Atascosa 4C’s students of all ages watched and listened attentively as Trooper Kempf presented an audio-visual program at the 4C’s center in Poteet.

Ross Nieschwitz (left) and Gary Wisdom (right), who were teammates last year for the Pleasanton Eagles, proved that they were not only fine footballers, but good fisherman. Last Sunday they caught this nice string of bass, the 10 fish weighing just over 32 pounds.

Poteet Public Library was formally dedicated and its major benefactor, Mrs. Dwight W. Tuttle, was honored at special ceremonies held Thursday, July 13, at the new library site at the corner of Avenue H and 5th street.

San Marcos bound are PHS seniors Lovetta Arguijo and Mike Schultz to attend a student conference on the free enterprise system at Southwest Texas State University. These two students are being sponsored by Atascosa Savings and Loan and are representing the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce.

50 years ago

Randy Smith, member of the PHS FFA chapter, will be presented with the Lone Star Farmer degree – highest award of the state level – at the annual State FFA convention now going on in Lubbock. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Holland Smith.

60 years ago

Larry Kendrick, Falcon third-sacker, was named as the winner of the Charlie Dobbins memorial sportsmanship trophy this year. The award is presented annually by the Lions Club to a Pleasanton Little Leaguer for outstanding sportsmanship.
