The Poteet FFA held their annual banquet on Sunday May 23 at the Poteet Lions Club. They would like to say a big thank you to the Lions Club for the use of the facility, Sam Cervantez and family for catering the meal and Jenna Smith for the outstanding cookies for everyone to enjoy.
The banquet was started by the 2019-2020 senior officers, Derek Scharmann, Markus Aguilar and Hannah Watts giving their retiring speeches that they were unable to give last year. Then they introduced the 2020-2021 officer team that led into the banquet agenda. A great welcome to all was given by President Cutter Blagg.
A starting prayer was led by chaplain Hannah Camarillo. Special guests in attendance were announced by the secretary Haley Hammonds. The agenda was followed with all officers talking about the “History of the Year.” This included events from the Fall CDEs, LDEs, stock show results, spring CDEs, SDEs and the final event of the Area X FFA convention.
All results and placings were recognized and the students were all given rounds of applause by the approximate 100 plus members and guests in attendance.
Individual class awards were then presented to the following students: Principles of AFNR – Peyton Haak, Ag Mech and Metal – Carlos Zuniga, Ag Facilities and Design – Julian Moya, Ag Power – Ruby Gaytan-Castillo, Livestock Production – Katelyn Smith, Vet Med – Cutter Blagg, Practicum of AFNR – Julia Smith, Equine – Brianna Garcia, Small Animal – Hannah Settle, Goat Feeder – Elizabeth Lopez, Swine Feeder – Cutter Blagg, Poultry Feeder – Tristan Sanchez, Rabbit Feeder – Colt Camarillo, Beef Feeder – Madison Maglievaz and Ag Mech Award – Reyna Leal these awards are made by Gillespie Custom Cabinets and we thank them for the beautiful awards.
Mr. Stevens then presented the Star Greenhand Awards to Brianna Garcia and Katelyn Smith. Mr. Kennedy presented the Star Chapter Awards to Julia Smith and Dalton Wilson. Announcement of the Lone Star recipients of Julia Smith and Madison Maglievaz was mentioned for the State Degree.
Jayci Kennedy was recognized for receiving her American FFA Degree this past year. Scholarships were then awarded to the graduating senior who applied and met their qualifications. The Edward Geyer Memorial scholarship for $1,000 was presented to Cutter Blagg.
The Pleasanton Young Farmers presented $200 to both Madison Maglievaz and Cutter Blagg. The Poteet Community Buyers Group presented $500 to Hannah Watts, Derek Scharmann, Cutter Blagg and Madison Maglievaz. Poteet Rotary/FFA concession stand scholarship of $500 was awarded to Madison Maglievaz.
The Poteet Rotary Club representative, Will Bates, presented the Poteet FFA with their annual fundraiser check for the work at the Poteet Strawberry Festival. This year the FFA was presented with a check of $21,911.86 for their percentage of work with the Rotary Club.
The next awards were presented from the officers to the recipients of the Honorary FFA Degree. This award was presented to Stephanie Scharmann, Charles Camarillo and Sheryl Mills. The evening was finished when the 2021-2022 officer team was installed, and retirement awards were handed out. Cutter Blagg and Madison Maglievaz gave their retirement speeches.
Then seniors for the 2019-2020 class, Hannah Watts, Derek Scharmann, Markus Aguilar and 2020-2021 class, Cutter Blagg, Madison Maglievaz, Brooke Rasmussen and Natalie Michalec hung up their jackets to finish off the evening.
