2016 has already started off with some measurable rain and it is good to report that 2015 was a great year with over 41 inches reported at the Atascosa County Soil and Water Conservation District No. 307.
For 2015, 41.07 inches were recorded from January through December. Over the past 82 years, rain measuring over 40 inches has only occurred 13 times, with the most being recorded in 2007 with 53.04 inches.
April and May’s readings of 7.63 and 12.04 respectively, met almost half of the 40+ inches. Then, of course, came October with almost 5 inches occurring during Cowboy Homecoming, forcing much of the celebration to be cancelled.
While ranchers always welcome rain, area farmers should be pleased as well.
“The submoisture is good for crops that will be planted during the spring,” said Atascosa County Extension Agent Dale Rankin.
