Jack Rutherford of Pleasanton, 1980 Working Cowboy of the Year, passed away this weekend, Saturday, February 27. Rutherford was a lifelong resident of Atascosa County and the son of a pioneer ranching family. While still in his teens, he left home and moved into a cow camp for a number of years. He was a true cowboy all of his life and at one time or another he worked on almost every big outfit in the county. Rutherford was true to the tradition of a real cowboy in that he had the reputation for being able to handle lots of cattle by himself. Rutherford was inducted into the South Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2008.
Mr. Rutherford’s obituary is on 9B.
