The 150th birthday of Pleasanton was celebrated last Saturday at the Riverpark and for those who attended, had a great time.
The children’s wagon and bike parade began the days’ festivities with the official opening ceremonies provided by the Pleasanton Boy Scout Troop 194. After the presentation of the color guard they led the Pledge of Allegiance. Mayor Bill Carroll welcomed everyone and Senator Judith Zaffirini, District 21, sent a Senate Proclamation stating: “WHEREAS, the Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the City of Pleasanton on the grand occasion of its 150th anniversary; and
WHEREAS, known as the City of Live Oaks and Friendly Folks, Pleasanton is a farm and ranch community established in 1958 in Atascosa County whose residents represent a rich blend of Anglo, Spanish, and Mexican heritage; and
WHEREAS, Pleasanton is renowned as a hunter’s paradise with its many white-tailed deer, doves, and quail that attract huntsmen during thefall and winter hunting seasons; and
WHEREAS, from the city’s founding fathers through each succeeding generation, the citizens of Pleasanton have worked to maintain a high quality of life and to foster pride in a community that lives up toits name; and
WHEREAS, the city’s sesquicentennial celebration will take place on September 27, 29008, starting with a achildren’s parade that will be followed by a day filled with historiucal remembrances, music, food, and fun for the whole family; and
Where as the citizens of Pleasanton have reason to be proud of their rich past and the many contributions they have made to the State of Texas, now, therefore, be it
PROCLAIMED, That the Senate of the State of Texas hereby extend congratulations to the citizens of Pleanton on the city’s sesquicentennial anniversary and extend to all best wishes for a splendid celebration and, be it further

Area dignitaries, including past and present mayors and council members were also recognized.
Historian Norman Porter gave a talk on the early days of Pleasanton and was followed by a show presented by the Mountain Warriors. The Knights of Columbus BBQ Classic welcomed 37 teams competing for the best brisket, ribs, chicken and beans.
Door prizes were given throughout the day, a kids’ area with a petting zoo, face painting, games and lots of entertainment was enjoyed. The County Line Community Band played music from the 40s and up.
The Average Joe Band, Sustain and then the dance band Maravia rounded out the evening’s entertainment.
The City of Pleasanton sponsored the free event. Those who helped coordinate the event were: Kathy Coronado, city manager; Jim Coronado, food vendors; Nicole Rakowitz, arts and crafts; Walt Rakowitz, logistics/ games; Hector Moreno, David Caballero, Landa Diaz, Travis and Gail Powell, door prizes; Mary Gallegos, children’s parade, Sue Brown Elizondo, publicity/parade, Bob Hoffman and Knights of Columbus, BBQ Classic; Jerry Davidson, the City of Pleasanton council, staff and public works and the Pleasanton Police Department.
