Wiede
Martin was born on July 3, 1926 in Maxwell. He was the son of Henry and Minnie Wiede. Martin went to be with God on May 18, 2009 at 10:15 am. Martin is survived by his wife Lillian Wiede of sixty an one half years, two sons Robert Wiede of Pleasanton, Jeffery Wiede and wife Kathy of North Platte Nebraska, and one daughter Valerie Craig and Gary Ping of Jourdanton, four grandchildren Jason Wiede and wife Laci of San Antonio, John Wiede and Sarah Goslin of Austin, Jaclyn Seidel and husband Brandon of Tilden, and Feryn Wiede of North Platte, Nebraska, three great grandchildren, Kaity Poth, Karson and Kyndell Seidel all of Tilden. Martin is survived by two brothers, Walter Wiede, of Comfort, George Wiede of Floresville, and two sisters, Olivia Hitt of San Antonio and Leona Beuhring of Molton. Martin is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Minnie Wiede. As a young boy Martin attended the Kenedy public school system, was a member of the high school football team, and an active member of the Boy Scouts. Martin’s entrepreneurial spirit started when he was a young boy in Kenedy. He would sell week old copies of Ladies Home Journal and Saturday Evening Post magazines door to door to make money so he could watch a movie at the Rialto theatre for ten cents. Martin was always looking for ways to earn money. Another job Martin held was a caddy at the Kenedy Golf Course. Martin also did a little custodial work helping clean up at the local dentist office in exchange for dental care. He was always looking for any type of odd job to put some money in his pocket and help out his parents financially. Martin enlisted in the Marines in San Antonio on April 14, 1944. This was an extremely important decision for him, only being seventeen and three quarters years old at the time of his enlistment. He graduated from Infantry and Browning Automatic Rifle School at Training Command in California. Marines who graduated from this school were assigned to Infantry Battalions and their training had prepared them for amphibious landings and establishing and securing beach heads. As a WWII Veteran he served time in the South Pacific and China. Serving in the Marines was always one of his proudest accomplishments. In later years as Martin’s health began to fail, his visits to the VA Hospital were always greeted by fellow Marine comrades with a “Semper Fi” as he traveled up and down the halls. A most recent tribute was delivered with one final “Semper Fi” from a faithful friend and Comrade – Thank You Truitt Whitmire. Martin returned to Kennedy in 1946 and began work at Ruhmans Supply. Martin also helped his father with his blacksmith shop in his free time. While Martin was working for Ruhmans Supply he met his future wife, Lillian Goetz who was selling cream and eggs from her dad’s farm in Pawnee. Later on in life Martin started driving a fuel truck for Tude Massey, a Texaco dealer. This was another way Martin got to see Lillian as he would deliver fuel to the Goetz farm. After several years of dating, Martin and Lillian were married in the Lutheran Church in Kenedy on September 26, 1948. Martin’s desire to own his own business brought him and Lillian to Pleasanton to own and operate a Mobil service station. Being in the service station business was not as profitable as it is today so Martin made a move from the service station to the oilfield and went to work for Halliburton Services. After some time spent in the oilfield which required Martin to be away from home at nights and on the weekends he pursued another job opportunity with Lance Inc. which required a move to Austin. Martin worked two jobs while in Austin providing for his family and allowing Lillian to stay home with the children. Martin worked for Lance Inc. for about three years. Martin and his family returned to Karnes City to begin his career with Western Auto. Martin was offered a position as manager of the Western Auto Store in Poteet which is the move that located the Wiede family to Jourdanton in 1962. After many years of managing Western Auto and True Value Stores, Martin was offered the opportunity to purchase a Western Auto Franchise and own his own business once again. The new Western Auto was located where the current Super S Food store is in Jourdanton. While working, managing, and building the Western Auto business Martin also found time to pursue a career in Insurance sales. Martin got his start with Hermann Sons when a man by the name of Charles Garrett would wait for him after hours at Hermann Sons Home office in San Antonio. This was before the time of cell phones, so Martin would have to throw pebbles up at the window to alert Mr. Garrett that he had arrived and they could get to work learning the Insurance business. In 1985 Martin sold the store and semi retired. This semi retirement allowed Martin to become a very successful agent with Hermann Sons winning numerous awards in the Presidents Club, Executive Club, and the Million Dollar Club. He also earned his F.I.C. with Hermann Sons and was a General Agent until his health began to fail. Martin was also an agent for Hochheim Prairie farm Mutual Insurance and Garfield Farm Mutual Insurance serving on the Board of Directors of both organizations. Martin was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, and was a Sunday school teacher for several years when the children were young. Martin always had faith in God. No matter what the challenge or what obstacles might come his way Martin always had faith that the Lord would provide what was needed. Pastor Scott’s home visits, hospital visits and finally nursing home visits made it possible for Martin to stay as active as possible in his faith and the church when he could no longer travel. Martin was also involved in many civic activities. He was a volunteer fireman, member of Chamber of Commerce, Past Commander of the American Legion and the VFW, served on the Jourdanton City council and held the position of Mayor Pro Tem of Jourdanton. Martin was truly blessed by God to be surrounded by such a wonderful family and group of friends. Thanks to Pastor Scott Anderson of St. John Lutheran Church for conducting a beautiful service. Thanks to Christina Adair for singing “In The Garden” and “On Eagles Wings”. Thanks to Martin’s three nieces, Lynn Wiede, Janie Hughes, and Nancee Morgan all of San Antonio, for sharing a time of remembrance of Martin’s Life. The committal portion of the service was conducted at the St. John Lutheran cemetery in Jourdanton, Texas. Martin was truly blessed by God to be surrounded by such a wonderful group of family and friends.
