Squaws battle through Stockdale Tournament

ERIC SMITH | PLEASANTON EXPRESS The Jourdanton Squaws volleyball season is off to a good start with a 2-1 record. This past Tuesday August 14th the Squaws traveled to Pearsall for the opening game of their season. They also competed in the Stockdale tournament on August 16th and 18th and the Devine tournament also on Saturday the 18th.
On Tuesday, the Squaws traveled to Frio County to face the Pearsall Lady Mavericks. This was the first match of the season for Jourdanton’s young group of athletes. They started the match a tad bit timid and nervous which resulted in a 21-25 loss.
Hopeful Jourdanton fought hard to stay in the rally but fell short once again 16-25. The Squaws struggled to get it together but were unable to recover causing them to be defeated by the Lady Mavericks 23-25 in game three.

Stockdale Tournament- On August 16th-18th the Squaws traveled to Stockdale to compete in their tournament. In pool play Jourdanton faced the Poteet Agates, Runge Lady Jackets and home squad Lady Brahmas.
Jourdanton opened the day of the tourney against opponent the Runge Lady Jackets. The Squaws made it a quick two games 25-14 and 25-12 to claim a victory for Jourdanton. Tori Bautista-3 kills; Tristan Velasquez-3 aces; Allison Vyvlecka- 8 assists; Ashley Myers- 3 digs.
In the second match of pool play, the Squaws came out on the court refreshed and ready for an intense game against the Poteet Agates. Although the Squaws showed improvement they were defeated by the Agates in two sets 20-25 and 20-25. Kaitlin Hindes- 6 kills; Brooklynne Meyer- 2 aces; Kelsey Ripple- 2 aces; Tori Bautista- 2 aces;Cassandra Reyes-6 assists; Ashley Meyers- 8 digs.
The last game of pool play was against the host team Lady Brahmas. Jourdanton struggled in the first match as they fell short handing over a win to Stockdale 17-25. The Squaws came back in game two 25-23 but were not able to keep the momentum over to game three where the Lady Brahmas took the victory 20- 25. Cassandra Reyes- 5 kills, 3 assists; Kaitlin Hindes- 5 kills, 4 aces; Jessica Eisenhauer 8 digs.
Bracket play- Jourdanton versus the Luling Lady Eagles was the agenda for Saturday the 18th. Jourdanton stepped out on the court confident and snagged the first set 25- 16. They went into game two with high hopes of carrying on their win but were not able to get past Luling dropping three straight 14-25, 16-25 and 14-25. Tori Bautista- 6 kills: Kaitlin Hindes- 5 kills; Breanna Henderson- 6 digs; Kelsey Ripple- 4 aces; Cassandra Reyes-5 assists; Allison Vyvlecka-5 assists.
The Squaws were in position for consolation against Holy Cross Lady Knights. With enough upsets for the weekend the Squaws put it down on the Lady Knights and came out on top with two wins 25-22 and 25-11. Brooklyne Meyer-4 aces: Kaitlin Hindes- 5 kills, 5 aces; Ashley Myers- 6 kills; Tori Bautista- 5 kills; Cassandra Reyes-3 assists:Jessica Eisenhauer- 9 digs.
“This match was the best of the tournament for us. The second game we finally clicked as a team. We played with intensity and aggressiveness and really showed the potential we have for the season.” stated coach Fogle.
Myers named to All Tournament
“We have grown so much from the team we were last year. We are young and the inexperience is only going to get better the more we play together. We got what we needed from the tournament. We were only to focus on a lot of small things that we needed to fix as a team and can only go up from here.” stated Coach Fogle.
Upcoming Contests: Jourdanton will take part in the 11th Annual Arabian Round Up in Devine on Saturday 18th. The tourney will begin with two days of pool play before it will enter bracket play.
