McMullen County Cowgirls off to a positive start

The McMullen County Cowgirls have practiced hard these first two weeks of volleyball and it has shown on the court thus far. During their week of action they visited Kenedy where they took part in a dual before hosting Victoria Christian Academy. To wrap up the weekend, the Cowgirls traveled to Pettus for a one-day tourney.

Kenedy Duel- In the Cowgirls first round they faced the Ben Bolt Lady Badgers and both teams were pumped and ready to get on the court. McMullen’s stamina was down in game one that resulted in the Lady Badgers stealing a win from the Cowgirls 25-15. McMullen pulled it together and fought back to win the two following games 25-20, 25-22. Fourth game Ben Bolt was determined to scoop up a win to keep this show going and that is exactly what they did. Mc- Mullen County fell short to Ben Bolt 25-18. In the nail biting last round McMullen County came out on top 15-13 putting them in the bracket to play the competitive Kenedy Leopards.

Next up for the Cowgirls, was the motivated Kenedy Leopards. McMullen’s aggressive serves helped them move past the Leopards capturing a six point win 25-19. The Cowgirls fought hard in game two but fell short 25-23. Not able to say the same for the following game McMullen got away with a 25-9 loss to Kenedy. In the last two games McMullen & Kenedy went point for point barely escaping with wins 19-25, 15-17. “I am so proud of the girls fighting spirit yesterday and the drive to never give up, they fought for a win the entire time! They keep improving with each match and I am excited for the season. They are such a great group of girls that deserve lots of success! We are now 2-0 and so is JV. The JV played Ganado and Kenedy and walked away with two wins in the contests. Coach Dawson credited their great job serving and working together as a team to the victories,” stated Coach Remmers.

VCA- The Cowgirls carried their 2-0 start to the season back home as they hosted Victory Christian Academy on Friday, August 17. Falling short the first game 25-23 the Cowgirls repaired and headed out stronger wrapping the day up with three straight wins 18-25,20-25, 14-25. Jordan Smith was a big contributor to the Cowgirl’s wins with 13 kills for the night.

“We started out slow but once we woke up we did a much better job of setting up the kill and serving better, we are now 3-0 unfortunately JV lost in 2, 18-25 and 23-25 they are now 2-1.

On Saturday, August 18th the McMullen County Cowgirls traveled to Pettus to take part in a one-day tournament. The Cowgirls split with Ben Bolt and Prairie Lea in pool play which placed them in second in their pool in bracket play.

McMullen County played Aqua Dulce in the first game and won two straight 25-13 and 25-21. With the win over Aqua Dulce the Cowgirls advanced to the winning bracket and tangled with Ben Bolt again winning the first round 26-24. Ben Bolt was able to escape the Cowgirls with 21-25 and 16-25 victories marking a loss for McMullen County. The upset to Ben Bolt held the Cowgirls back from the championship but allowed them to play for third place against Prairie Lea. McMullen defeated Prairie Lea in the second and third game to capture third place in the tournament.

Upcoming Games- This Thursday and Saturday, August 23rd and 25th the Cowgirls will travel to Live Oak County to take part in the Three Rivers Tournament.

On Thursday, McMullen County will face the following schools in pool play action: 10:00 a.m. –vs- Orange Grove, 12:15 –vs- Charlotte and 1:45 –vs- Runge.

The Cowgirls will return to action on Saturday for bracket play at times TBA dependent on their pool play results.

On Tuesday, August 21st McMullen County will host Agua Dulce starting at 4:00 p.m. for a varsity only contest.
