Funds to assist Florez family

Rebekah Florez Rebekah Florez Funds are currently being raised to go toward medical bills for Rebekah Florez of Pleasanton.

Florez is a 19-year old college student of UTSA in San Antonio. She is the drummer and background vocalist at her home church, Hosanna Baptist, in Poteet. She was Homecoming Queen at Pleasanton High School, Band Queen, starting point guard for the Varsity Girls Basketball team and was a part of many other projects.

In September of 2011, a month after she started school, she started having blurry vision. After being checked out, they noticed swelling behind her eyes.

This ended up being a tumor that needed to be surgically removed. The surgery left her partially paralyzed on her left side, which doctors say she should recover from, as well as no peripheral vision in her left eye.

After several months of recovery, she began getting weaker instead of stronger. She started losing her appetite, losing weight and losing hope. She got down to 82 pounds at her lowest.

When they took her to the hospital to check her out, they found cancer in her spine. She is now at MD Anderson, in Houston, to receive better treatment than she could get anywhere else.

On her first week of college, she joined a Christian group that held Bible Studies and other events.

She told the family that she wanted God to do something with her life that would impact thousands of people. After her family received the news of everything, she said that this is what God was going to use her with.

The hope is fading but is still there, and the support and love behind her is unfathomable.

Her family is trying to raise money to help with the medical bills that are, and that are to come. Any donation, no matter how small, would be more appreciated than you can imagine.

The Florez family will also accept cash or check donations that can be dropped off at Hosanna Baptist, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please call 830-742-3879 ahead of time to notify them that you are dropping by.

“Thank you for taking the time to read this. Even your thoughts and prayers are appreciated as much as a monetary donation, so whatever you decide, may God bless you and your family,” expressed the family of Rebekah Florez.
