Keeping a great team intact?
One of the hardest things not just in the NFL but in all major league sports, like the NBA & MLB is to keep a great crop of players together or at least continued years of success. There are a few teams like the Forty Niners, the Cowboys, the Patriots, the Spurs, the Bulls, the Rangers & the Yankees that have had years of success. Within those years of success, some of these teams managed to keep the most productive players on the roster together. Some have had to continually replace those players with an equal replacement through great scouting, the draft and free agency, and had success doing so.
One team that has a great head coach, known for finding the perfect fit for his program is Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots. He has added and lost great players, but his team has still been known as a current Dynasty Team along with other teams in the past that I mentioned and also may not have mentioned. Those players that went after deeper contracts with other teams, most did not continue with the success they enjoyed under these great programs.
Another Franchise is the Pittsburg Steelers, who was the first team to win their sixth super bowl win in 2009. The San Fransisco Forty Niners and Dallas Cowboys currently have five. The New York Giants currently won there fourth with a great chance to get there fifth this upcoming season. It seems the Steelers have had some changes in their coaching staff, raising the question, can they come up with another one in the next few seasons before having to rebuild their franchise.
Through the past of the NFL, this has continued to take place, players taking the higher dollar contract over having success in their career. Money versus a continued successful career? Take the big money now and your career is over a few seasons later or alter your contract with the great team you are currently on so they can afford some other addtitions to the team and have a great career many years later with the same team. Although as mentioned earlier, some great teams are able to adapt to those players going after a greater dollar and fill there spots (Shoes) with someone more than willing to put forth a great worth for the team that was willing to place trust upon them.
