Trojan baseball splits non-district contests

The Charlotte Varsity Trojans were able to split non-district games during their Spring Break week of action. After taking down the Pettus Eagles at home, Charlotte suffered a hard fought battle in Nixon against the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs. Charlotte falls to 11-3 overall as they prepare for the start of district action.

Pettus- The Pettus Eagles were in town for a non-district contest last Tuesday, March 13th. Charlotte’s Isaac Santos had a great day on the mound, as he held the Eagles to just one hit and one run the entire contest. Santos also struck out 14-batters during his impressive outing.

Charlotte’s offense on the other hand, used four hits and four Pettus defensive errors to produce four runs en route to their 4-1 victory over the Eagles.

“Isaac threw the ball really well. His breaking stuff was just nasty,” stated Coach Gates referring to Santos’s great day on the mound.

At bat- Santos 0-2-1run scored, Javier Zuniga 1-4, Dilan Weigang 2-4-1RBI, Nick Luna 1-1-2runs scored, Tyler Cantu 0-0-1run scored, Felipe Vallejo 0-2, Jose Rodriguez 0-3-1RBI, Steven Oropeza 0-3, James De- Leon 0-2, John Mark Pesqueda 0-1 and Johnny Luna 0-1.

Nixon-Smiley- The Trojans traveled east to Nixon last Thursday to face the Stangs in what turned out to be a high scoring affair. At the end of the day, despite having the same number of hits as the Stangs and less defensive errors, Charlotte still came up just short at the end of the contest.

The Trojans were led by Nick Luna and Dilan Weigang on the mound, who pitched six innings in the game. Luna pitched the first 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits and 12- runs (8 earned) while walking three and striking out ten in the game. Weigang pitched the final inning, as he allowed one hit while walking one and striking out three.

The Trojans jumped on the Mustangs early, as they led 6-1 after three innings of play. Nixon-Smiley rallied back, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth closing the gap to 6-5 going into the fifth inning.

Charlotte was able to regain the lead, scoring four runs in the top of the fourth, but went on to surrender three runs in the bottom of the 5th and four in the bottom of the 6th inning. As a result, Charlotte fell to the Stangs 12-11 in an eventful competition on the diamond.

The Trojans and Mustangs finished with nine hits each as Charlotte’s defense gave up three defensive errors compared to six by the Mustangs.

“We beat ourselves. We had leads of 7-1 and 11-6 and couldn’t hold them. The bad part is, Nick pitched well enough and deserved to get the win,” stated Coach Gates.

At bat- Santos 3-4-2runs scored-1RBI, J. Zuniga 1-5- 1run scored-1RBI, Weigang 1-4-2runs scored-1RBI, N. Luna 0-4-1RBI, Rodriguez 2-5-2RBIs, J. Luna 2-3-1run scored-2RBIs, Cantu 0-3-1run scored-1RBI, Vallejo 0-1-1run scored, De- Leon 0-2-1run scored, Tijerina 0-0-1run scored, Estrada 0-0- 1run scored and Pesqueda 0-1.
