State Lift Meet Saturday
J.H.S.- The Jourdanton Indians will be taking three lifters and an alternate to the State Powerlifting Meet this Saturday, March 24th. The State Meet will be held at the Taylor Exposition Center in Abilene.
Representing the tribe will be senior Manuel Tijerina, who won the Super Heavy Weight class at the regional meet, sophomore Enrique Lugo, who won the 242 lb. class, and junior Israel Aguero, who placed 2nd in the 242 lb. class. Sophomore Joe Estrada placed 3rd in the 181 lb. class and will represent Region V as an alternate. Only the top 2 lifters in each class or who met a qualifying total can represent their region at the State Meet. This will mark the 2nd year in a row that Tijerina will be lifting at the State Meet.
Manuel will be among the favorites to bring home one of the top 3 medals from the State Meet. It will take a total of well over 1600 lbs. in this years Super Heavy Weight class to win the event. He is one of three lifters at the State Meet who have achieved that total or more.
Competition is going to be tough in the 242 lb. class where Lugo and Aguero will be competing. There are also three lifters in that class who have reached a total of over 1600 lbs. Lugo, who totaled 1500 lbs. at the regional meet is a contender for one of the top 5 places at State.
“Winning a medal at the State Meet would be an outstanding achievement. These young men have worked very hard since the end of football season to achieve the success they have. The whole team has represented Jourdanton High School well this year. They brought home a trophy from every meet they participated in, winning several meet championships. They set 3 individual records at the Regional Meet. Participating at the State Meet and hopefully bringing home some State medals will be a crowning achievement for these guys. I couldn’t be any prouder,” stated Coach David Selph.
We want to wish the Indians the best of luck in Abilene.
Poteet- On March 24, Ricky Guerra will be competing at the State Meet to be held in Abilene. He competed at the regional meet held in Bishop on March 9 and finished 2nd with a total of 950 lbs.
The totals for the regional meet were: 360 lbs. squat, 230 lbs. bench, and 360 lbs. in the deadlift. Ricky will be representing Region 5 Division 2 in the 123 lbs. weight class. Last year he was an alternate, missing competing by 5 lbs. at the state meet. This year he is ranked 4th in state in his division. He has worked hard to go to state this year.
Good Luck at State!
