Trojan Basketball ends season with tough loss
The Charlotte Trojans stumbled to the finish line, as their season on the hardwood has come to an end. The Trojans lost their 9th straight game, as Gervin Academy downed them in a blowout loss. Charlotte Basketball finishes the year 5-25 overall and 2-10 in 30-1A action.
“S.A. Gervin was simply too much for us to handle. We had good production on the night from Dilan Weigang who had 14-points on the night. They just dominated us in every phase of the game,” stated Coach Jeff Niemietz.
Things were not out of reach early in this one, as Gervin led the Trojans 20-10 after a quarter of action.
The issue occurred in the second quarter, as Gervin ran past Charlotte outscoring them 16-9 which extended their lead to 36-19 at the end of the first half.
In the second half, Gervin put Charlotte down for the count, outscoring them 26-5 which put them ahead 62-24 going into the final quarter of action.
In the fourth, Charlotte continued to get overpowered as they were outscored 18-8, giving Gervin the season ending 80-32. It was a tough way to end a tough season for the Trojans, as Gervin continued to ride high headed into the playoffs as the top team in the district.
“We finished in 6th place in district and were represented well in the All-District meeting. Despite our record in the end, I have to say our team put a lot of hard work in. Their record is not a reflection of their time and effort during practice and the season,” stated Niemietz.
The Trojans will lose plenty of familiar faces due to graduation. “We will lose Nick Luna, Steven Oropeza, Andres Garcia, Joe Salazar, Trey Zuniga and Brady Watts. These guys were freshmen my first year here and it was fun to coach them again as seniors. I wish them the best and I hope that they are able to take some of the lessons learned from the season and apply it to their future careers,” Coach Niemietz added.
Looking ahead, Coach Jeff Niemietz is hopeful that some of his younger players will step up.
“We will be young next year as we will be led by Johnny Luna-Junior, John Mark Pesqueda-Sophomore, and Dilan Weigang-Sophomore. These young men will continue to improve during the off-season and will provide the leadership for the rest of the team next year,” stated Niemietz in closing.
