The Poteet Agates battled hard, but dropped their first two games of the 2011-2012 season. Poteet fell to Somerset in a close one run game, before dropping a road game against highly touted Bandera.

Somerset- The Agates began their season on the road in Somerset last Tuesday, February 14th. Poteet’s Ashley Casias pitched the entire game, accounting for four strikeouts, while giving up six hits and three runs in the game.

Poteet dropped a 3-2 decision, as Poteet rallied back with two late runs after being down 2-0. Poteet finished the game with six total hits.

At bat- Alyssa Sanchez 2-4, Britney Rodriguez 0-3-1run scored, Melanie Hawthorne 1-4, Gabby Garcia 1-2, Ashley Casias 0-3, Cassandra Leal 1-3, Brandy Machado 0-1, A. Hograves 1-2-1run scored, Clarissa Rodriguez 0-3 and Lauren Zavala 0-2.

Bandera- Coming off a hard fought loss against Somerset, Poteet traveled to the Hill Country on Monday, February 20th to battle a Bandera squad who made plenty of noise in last year’s playoffs.

Casias took the mound once again for the Agates, as she pitched six innings, facing 29 batters, allowing six hits in the game and 2-earned runs.

Bandera was able to down the Agates, 5-1 as the Agates scored their lone run in the sixth inning courtesy of an RBI by Gabby Garcia, which scored Britney Rodriguez.

Poteet finished with four hits compared to six by the Lady Bulldogs.

At bat- Zavala 0-2, B.Rodriguez 0-3-1run scored, Machado 0-2, Coronado 0-1, Sanchez 1-3, C.Rodriguez 0-3, Hawthorne 0-3, Leal 1-2, Casias 1-3, and Garcia 1-3-1RBI.

“Ashley had a good game on the mound. She threw 61 strikes out of 92 pitches. We hit off of Bandera, but not in the right situations. We were unable to rally and stranded too many batters. Bandera was a good team and good early season test for us,” stated Coach Martin Alvarez.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28th the Agates will travel to Natalia to face the Lady Mustangs with a 5:00 p.m. Jv and a 7:00 p.m. Varsity contest.
