New leadership to guide Poteet Aggies

ERIC SMITH

A few changes within the Poteet Athletic Department this season have resulted in new leadership. Former Head Coach Bart Oropeza is now the Athletic Director, as former assistant coach Nino Trevino has taken over the ball club. The Aggies will return plenty of familiar faces, with hopes of building a successful team this year.

A look back- The Aggies struggled last season, as it was considered to be a “rebuilding” year due to numerous young athletes on the squad. The overall record for the Aggies was not available, but they did finish 2-10 in 28-3A with their only victories coming against Sam Houston.

Meet the Aggies- Poteet will return plenty of talent to the table this season. They return: Ruben Reyessenior Pitcher/infielder, Kevin Camarillo-seniorpitcher/ catcher/infielder, Jon Guerra-senior-1st base, John Matt Lopez-pitcher/ infielder, Ronald Sanchezjunior outfield, Eric Perez-junior-outfielder, and Brandon Herrera-sophomore pitcher/3rd base.

Other players to watch include: Ricky Guerra, Derrick Santos, Ryan Chapa, Gene Fernandez and David Garcia.

“I think our team strength will be our speed this season. I am excited about the opportunity to take over the program that has been taken care of by my predecessor, Coach Oropeza. I was an assistant to the program for the last two years and I think the kids will benefit from there being a little consistency in the program. I also plan to bring in some new ideas and change it up a bit,” stated Coach Trevino.

Schedule Outlook- The Aggies began their season with scrimmages against Somerset and Hondo. Their first regular season game was held this past Monday, February 20th at home against the Pearsall Mavericks. The Aggies lost a hard fought game to the Mavericks by a score of 6-5. No stats were available.

The Aggies were also set to face S.A. Kennedy, Charlotte and Somerset in non-district action. Poteet will compete in the Pleasanton Varsity and the Devine Warhorse Classic.

28-3A has not changed, as the Aggies will compete against Sam Houston, Gonzales, Pleasanton, LaVernia, Cuero and Yoakum.

“There are high expectations for this group for the season and I think that the athletes understand that and welcome the challenge. We have quite a few seniors in the group and I am excited to see them play a strong leadership role to the younger players who will be contributing at the varsity level. As far as goals are concerned, they are simple; we want to win. We also want to gain a better understanding of the game and how it is played,” stated Coach Trevino in closing.
