Lady Eagle Soccer claims district opener
Kelsie Piland has been vital during recent games. The Lady Eagle Varsity Soccer team was able to claim two games in a row including their District 57- 4A opener. Pleasanton was able to blank Flour Bluff and McCollum, as they improve to 7-4-2 on the season as they will continue district action this week.
Flour Bluff-The Lady Hornets from the Coastal Bend were in town last Tuesday, February 14th. The Lady Eagles came out and were focused against a team who has been dominant in the region in recent years.
“We had a great game on Tuesday night. They came to town and we had unsettled business. Last year we were three minutes away from beating them before they equalized the game at 1-1. They have been to the Regional Tournament for the last four years in a row and are again a premiere team,” stated Coach Brant Bird.
The Lady Eagles didn’t waste time, as they set the tone early as Sterling Woerner received a pass from Jacquelyn Olle, beating the keeper 1:30 into the game.
“This goal gave us a lot of confidence. Our passing was crisp and we were winning the 50/50 challenges,” stated Bird.
With 10:00 minutes to go in the first half, Olle was able to run down the left side and squeeze in a short near the post to double the lead to 2-0 and this is how it would stand at the half.
In the second half, it was a hard fought contest. Flour Bluff did threaten Pleasanton, as they had a shot tipped onto the post by Pleasanton goalkeeper Kelsie Piland. Less than a minute later, the Lady Eagles put the game away as Woerner found the net again to seal the deal.
“This was a good win for us. I have challenged the girls to not be satisfied with simply competing with the best, but to actually beat the best and that is what we did tonight with our 3-0 victory,” Bird added in closing.
McCollum- The Cowgirls came to town for what turned out to be a damp Friday evening. The 57-4A opener was a bit lop-sided, as the Lady Eagles dominated, but as Coach Bird explained, still lacked in areas.
“The weather was a little damp, but the game went on. We didn’t have the sharpness that we had against Flour Bluff. Our energy seemed to be a bit low,” stated Coach Bird.
Sterling Woerner was able to open scoring once again, midway through the first half. Pleasanton was fortunate as the Cowgirls missed a penalty kick just minutes later.
Pleasanton was able to add their final goal of the first half, thanks to Emily Esquivel who scored her first goal of the season off of a cross from Jacquelyn Olle just before the half.
In the second half, McCollum never really tested the Lady Eagles. Pleasanton was able to strike two more times courtesy of goals from Woerner and Sarah Elmer to put this one down for the count.
Upcoming Games- On Friday, February 24th the Lady Eagle Varsity will host the Harlandale Indians with a 5:30 p.m. 57-4A contest. The JV Lady Eagles will host Harlandale on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
On Tuesday, February 28th the Lady Eagles will host the Floresville Jaguars for a 5:30 p.m. Jv and a 7:00 p.m. Varsity contest.
