Members of the Jourdanton Indian Baseball team huddle around Coach John Zamzow following a recent scrimmage. The Indians will travel to Pearsall this weekend for a varsity tournament. The 2011-2012 Jourdanton Indian Baseball team will rely on leadership this coming baseball season. After missing the playoffs for the first time in five years, Coach John Zamzow is looking for his team to get back in the hunt this season.

A look back- The Indians were able to compile an overall record of 7-15 last year and a district record of 5-9. According to Coach John Zamzow, the district will remain tough and every game will be a dog fight.

Zamzow enters his 7th year as the Head Coach of the Tribe as he sports a 66-80 record in Jourdanton and a 115-148 career record.

Aside from missing the playoffs last season, J-town did make the playoffs in 2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2007- 2008, 2009-2010 and was the district champ in 2010 where they fell to Van Vleck in the playoffs.

Meet the Indians- This season, the Indians will return five starters from last years club. Jourdanton returns: Kye Burris-senior-catcher, Aaron Lopez-senior-pitcher/outfielder, Mark Medina-sophomorepitcher/ short-stop, Kenny Huschke-senior-outfielder and Daniel Oliva-senior-outfielder.

Other players to watch include Jacob Fikes, Brandon Pacheco, Jack Riggs and Chase Harrison.

Schedule Outlook- The Indians opened their season with scrimmages against Freer, Pearsall, Lytle and Blanco.

“The scrimmages all went well. We found a few young kids that stepped up and will help out on varsity this year,” stated Coach John Zamzow.

The Indians will begin their season this Thursday-Saturday in the Pearsall Varsity Tournament. The tourney bracket is available on our website(sports, click on sports related documents).

The second tourney Jourdanton will compete in is in Pettus. The Indians will not face anyone in non-district, as 30-2A action begins right away. The Indians will face George West, Three Rivers, Cotulla, Poth, Karnes City, Dilley and Natalia in district once again.

“Dilley and Poth are two of the teams to beat again this year. Dilley returns a lot of players from last year and Poth has one of the best pitchers in the district. We are just really excited and ready to work hard,” stated Coach Zamzow.
