Indians finish season with victory
Jourdanton Indian Daniel Oliva puts up a free throw as Junior Elizondo and a Dilley Wolf look on. The Indians will miss the playoffs for a second straight season. The Jourdanton Indians were able to finish their season with a victory at home against the Dilley Wolves. The Tribe used great efforts from Daniel Oliva, Kenny Huschke and Colton Hurt offensively to lift them past the Wolves. The Indians finish their season with an 11-13 overall record and a 7-7 district record.
“Led by our seniors, we played a very focused defensive game. Our goals were to score 70-points and to hold Dilley to less than 50 and we did just that. Often when you face teams with nothing at stake, the focus seems to disappear. That certainly was not the case for us as we played like we were vying for the district title,” stated Jourdanton Head Coach, Josh Wadsworth.
The Indians jumped on the Wolves early and often. J.H.S. led Dilley 22-8 after a quarter of action and took a 35-23 lead into the locker room at the half.
In the second quarter, the Tribe continued their dominance offensively, outscoring Dilley 19-14 in the third quarter and 16-12 in the final quarter. This allowed the Indians to finish with a 70-49 victory.
Scoring- Oliva 20, Hurt 12, Huschke 11, Chase Harrison 8, Junior Elizondo 6, Nick Lopez 4, Preston Weden 4, Brent Tymrak 2, Anthony Elizondo 2 and Ruben Garcia 1.
The Indians were looked upon as one of the teams who could make noise this past season, but things never gelled together at the right time.
“Oftentimes this season, our biggest strengths were also our biggest pitfalls. We were loaded with speed, which afforded us the opportunity to run the floor on a lot of our opponents. Unfortunately, we all too often tried to force the objective and ended up turning the ball over. We wanted to focus on establishing a defensive presence this year. In all but two of our games where we held opponents under 60-points, we got a win,” stated Coach Wadsworth.
The Indians will lose six seniors from their ball club: Colton Hurt, Raul Elizondo, Kenny Huschke, Ruben Garcia, Daniel Oliva and Brent Tymrak.
“This is a very athletic and fun loving group of seniors. The levity they brought to our program helped keep me grounded throughout the season. These boys were very close knit and were enjoyable to watch,” added Wadsworth.
Looking ahead, Wadsworth stated all they can do is try and provide returnees with the opportunity in the off-season to compete together and improve fundamentally.
