Manuel Pena Martinez, age 83, of Poteet, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2012, in San Antonio. He was born August 14, 1928 in Crown.

He is survived by his daughters, Connie Martinez of Poteet, Cecilia Quistiano of Poteet, and Tina Ramos of Poteet, his son Manuel Martinez, Jr., of Floresville, as well as 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Martinez is preceded in death by his wife, Magdalena Davila Martinez, his parents Brigido and Elvira Pena Martinez, his sisters Concepcion Martinez and Romana Camacho, and his brothers, Victoriano Martinez, Pedro Martinez, Fernando Martinez, Brigido Martinez, Jr., and Felix Martinez.

Mr. Martinez worked with Standard Butane Company delivering butane and propane; he retired after 25 years to overcome stomach cancer. He had a love of helping his farmer friends with planting and raising crops such as squash, zucchini, watermelon, and strawberries. He also tended his own garden, which he continued to do until he was unable to because of his battle with lung cancer. He was a member of the choir at St. Philip Benizi in Poteet, where he also played guitar.

Visitation for Mr. Martinez will be held at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton, on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 from 2 - 9 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2012, at St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church, 274 Avenue H, Poteet, Texas, at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Madre Dolorosa Cemetery in Poteet.
