Farmers and ranchers to serve up lunch, collect can goods
Atascosa County Farm Bureau will demonstrate the farmer's share of the cost of food by selling grilled hamburgers for $1 on Thursday, February 23rd. The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. - while supplies last - at the Atascosa County Farm Bureau office parking lot, located on Highway 97 in Jourdanton.
Local farmers and ranchers will serve those bargain burgers to demonstrate the farmer's share of the cost of a hamburger. On average, American farmers and ranchers only receive about 19 cents for every dollar spent on food. The rest goes for costs beyond the farm gate: wages and materials for production, processing, marketing, transportation and distribution.
According to the latest statistics from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Americans earn enough disposable income to pay for their family's food supply for the whole year in about seven weeks.
In addition to serving burgers, the Atascosa County Farm Bureau will also be collecting canned food for Atascosa County food bank, CAM (Christian Assistance Ministry).
