Jourdanton stuns undefeated Poth Pirates
Coming off a disappointing loss on the road against the Cotulla Cowboys, the Indians showed one heck of an effort at home Friday night. The Tribe was able to stun district leading and undefeated Poth, thanks to a great defensive effort in the second half. The Indians improve to 10-11 overall and 6-5 in 30-2A. Playoff hopes remain on life support, but the victory over Poth did help their chances.
Cotulla- The Jourdanton Indians simply got out-hustled on the road once again. The Cotulla Cowboys came out on their home court and played with a lot more energy and emotion than did the Indians. The worst part about this game was this was the “key” to the playoffs. A victory here would have all but sealed a third place bid to the playoffs.
It was a back and forth contest, as four different Indians finished in double digit scoring. At the end of the night, second and third chance opportunities on offense helped Cotulla Cowboy Barraza to an unbelievable 42-point night. This allowed the Cowboys to down the Tribe, 82-70.
Scoring- Kenny Huschke 16, Nick Lopez 11, Anthony Elizondo 10, Junior Elizondo 9, Colton Hurt 8, Brent Tymrak 3 and Chase Harrison 3. Rebounds- Huschke 4, J. Elizondo 4. Steals- Huschke 3, Chase Harrison 3.
Poth- The Indians hosted the red hot Poth Pirates on Friday night, at J.H.S. The Pirates entered the game with a 14-12 (10-0) record, but left with their first district loss of the season.
The Pirates came out firing away from 3-point land, as they held a 15-9 lead at the end of the first and before holding a 33-24 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Indians played great defense, outscoring Poth 16-12 in the third and 19-11 in the fourth to capture the huge 59-56 upset victory.
“I was especially proud of our shot selection and decision making with the ball. Only having 12 turnovers against Poth is not bad, considering the hustle those guys play with. When we make good decisions with our shot selection, we get games like this one where we are just over 80% from inside the arc,” stated Coach Josh Wadsworth.
The Indians finished 25-35 overall, and 7-11 from the free throw line in the game.
Scoring- Junior Elizondo 16, Nick Lopez 14, Colton Hurt 12, Anthony Elizondo 5, Kenny Huschke 4, Daniel Oliva 4 and Brent Tymrak 2.
Upcoming Games- On Friday night, Feb. 10th the Indians will travel to Natalia to face the Mustangs with a Jv and Varsity contest set to begin at 5:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, Feb. 14th the Indians host the Dilley Wolves in what could be their final game of the 2011-2012 season. Playoffs are uncertain and it will depend on how other squads do. One thing is for sure, Jourdanton needs to win out to have a chance.
