ERIC SMITH | PLEASANTON EXPRESSÂ’ Amber Salazar drives past a Sabinal lady Jacket during a recent game. The Trojanettes are excited as they fight toward breaking a playoff drought that dates back to the early 2000s. ERIC SMITH | PLEASANTON EXPRESSÂ’ The Charlotte Trojanettes took another step toward breaking their playoff drought. Trojanette’s Amber Salazar and Brianna Hernandez led the way scoring double digits, en route to a nice victory over the LaPryor Lady Bulldogs. Charlotte improves to 18-11 overall and 6-3 in 30- 1A with the victory.

“We finally put some points on the board. I am really proud of what we did after half time,” stated Coach Shawn Vowell, when asked about his teams victory.

Consistent offense along with a scrappy defense resulted in success at C.H.S. last Friday night against LaPryor. The Trojanettes got off to a decent start in the first quarter, as Martina Castillo, Alexa Castillo and Brianna Hernandez combined for a 10-point quarter, giving them a 10-6 lead after one.

In the second quarter, Charlotte continued their success, as Hernandez, Amber Salazar and Vanessa Ramos took the reigns and went to work. They too, combined for a 10-point quarter giving their squad a 20-13 lead at the half.

“Martina picked up her third foul in the second quarter. We went with Veronica Cordova who is not comfortable playing a lot of minutes due to her knee bothering her. She started the third and played the whole quarter and a half. She is one of my most physical players who makes teams earn their shots,” stated Coach Vowell.

In the third quarter of action, both teams played to an even quarter, with 12-points each. This allowed the Eagles to take a 32-25 lead into the final quarter of the game.

In the fourth and final quarter, the Trojanettes put the Lady Dogs in their cage for good, outscoring them 19-9. In the quarter, Amber Salazar was on fire scoring 14-points in the quarter alone. This allowed the Trojanettes to finish with a 51-34 victory.

“I was proud that Amber got out of her shooting slump in the 4th quarter. Alexa who was my leading scorer has taken a back seat to Amber and Brianna, but she knows when they take them out, she will step up. On any given night I have four girls who can easily put up 20-points. On Tuesday night we will have a chance to do something Charlotte has not done in 9-years. We can secure a playoff spot and win 20-games,” stated Coach Shawn Vowell.

Scoring- Salazar 21, Hernandez 11, A. Castillo 6, M. Castillo 5, Ramos 4, Veronica Cordova 2, and Rebecca Munoz 2. Rebound leaders- M. Castillo 8, Salazar 5 and A. Castillo 4. Assists- Hernandez 4, Salazar 2 and A. Castillo 2.

Charlotte finished 9-23 from 2-point shots, 8-29 from three-point land and 9-13 from the free throw line.

District Standings: (as of press night) Sabinal 10-0, Charlotte 6-3, LaPryor 6-4, D’Hanis 4-5, S.A. Stacey 4-5, Brackett 3-6 and Gervin 0-10.

Upcoming Games- The Trojanettes will round out the regular season with two final games. On Friday, Feb. 3rd the Trojanettes will host Brackett with a 6:00 p.m. district contest set.

On Tuesday Feb. 7th the Trojanettes travel to D’Hanis for their final regular season game against the Cowgirls with a 6:00 p.m. contest set.
