Stating The Obvious

The world of sports never slows down
Eric Smith

With a crick in my neck, it has not been a very enjoyable Monday and Tuesday at the office. Unfortunately, yet fortunately, it is time to put out another edition of the Pleasanton Express. As we enter the month of February, it seems like the sports world never slows down. I cannot say I I’m never asked; “Are you ever going to be home right after work.” It sure does seem like right now, every day is something. As another month arrives, I hope you have continued to enjoy the product we take time to publish each and every week. It’s Brush Country Sports Coverage and we hope you are enjoying it.

A sad note- On a sad note, I want to change the subject just for a second. I wanted to ask you to pray for the family of Evelyn M. Kruse. Although I personally never had the chance to meet her, you could always find her and her family in the stands at a Pleasanton Eagle Football game. From a sports editor’s view from the field, I always got a kick out of the 71-year old because you could catch her standing and yelling for her team when no one else was. I only wish I would have had the opportunity to get to know her, but with that being said she still managed to make an impression on me.

Mrs. Kruse of Pleasanton passed away this past Sunday and I was not able to find out the cause. I am sure that members of her family, especially her grandson who is a huge Eagle’s fan will continue to attend games and carry on her spirit of Eagle Pride. It is always great to see people like Mrs. Kruse, who are good ol’ fans of their home town sports, even if they have no one playing in the games.

Crick in the neck- I get told all the time that I am a pain in the neck at times, but right now I have a pain of my own. I decided two week’s ago to take the golf clubs out of my garage and see if I could still swing a club. I have golfed off and on throughout most of my life as my father is an avid golfer. I am a lifetime member in Devine, but play maybe once or twice a year if that. Well, I have played two weeks in a row, but using a few muscles I don’t normally use has resulted in a little pain. Let’s just say, I have gotten hooked on the sport over the past few weekends and I hope to make it a weekly affair again. Even though I am no gringo Tiger Woods, it is a time where you can get out, enjoy a beautiful Saturday or Sunday afternoon, take out a little stress on the ball and enjoy s Dr. Pepper or two.

Super Bowl- Who is going to win the “big game” on Sunday, or do you even care? I am going to cheer for New England, but don’t be surprised if Sunday night comes and I cannot tell you about what happened. Something about the NFL just doesn’t attract me. I would take a college game any day over the NFL. Call me crazy, that is fine, but I think once athletes become pro, the money goes to their head and victory dances mean more than team work to them. Not to mention, sometimes you find team owners like Jerry Jones who will take fame and money over success, even if it results in missing the playoffs how many years in a row?

Spring Sports are here- I am starting to see a few new blooms on trees in South Texas, but they are coming a little too early. We all know despite the beautiful weather and recent rain, the cold spells are not over. Anytime the San Antonio Rodeo is on the horizon, you can assure yourself of a freeze or two. At least that is what history tells us, but maybe that will be broken this year.

As February has arrived, I am looking forward to baseball, softball and the rest of the spring sports. I guess pretty soon I will have to give area baseball coaches my cap size. My wife hates it, but I could always use a new baseball cap.

See you out and about in the world of Brush Country Sports.
