Auction breaks record: $584,386

DAVID WICKERSHAM | PLEASANTON EXPRESS Anticipation of a record-breaking year for the sales at the 58th Atascosa County Jr. Livestock Show were straight on target. With over a half million dollars, $584,326 to be exact,spent at the auction it was one for the record books for certain. Sales were up six figures $144,000 from 2011.
There were over 800 exhibitors with 240 making it to the auction.
Most are mainly interested in the price of the Grand Champion Steer. The $8,000 bid may have been less than last year’s steer, but it was still a solid price.

Grand Champions
The 2012 Grand Champion Steer was exhibited by Justin Smith, Mesquite 4-H. His Heavy Charolais Steer brought $8,000 from Mac Haik’s Southway Ford and Miller Lite Glazer’s Distributor .
Reagan Heffernan, Pleasanton FFA, showed her 2012 Grand Champion Swine (Lt. Hvy Cross), which sold for $5,600 at Saturday’s auction.
Leming/ Verdi 4-H member Kaylin Culpepper exhibited the 2012 Grand Champion Lamb (Lt. Medium Wool). Her lamb sold at auction this year for $5,800.
The 2012 Grand Champion Goat exhibited by Serah Kate Blair of Jourdanton FFA was sold for $8,115.
Madison Marie Lutz, Blackhill 4-H, exhibited her 2012 Grand Champion Turkey. It auctioned off for $6,056.
Leming/ Verdi 4-H’s Cade Royal received $3,250 for his 2012 Grand Champion Broilers.
The 2012 Grand Champion Rabbits were exhibited by Jacquelyn Olle, Chaparral 4-H, and sold them at auction for $5,000.
Reserve Grand Champions
The 2012 Reserve Grand Champion Steer was sold at auction for $7,650. The steer was shown by Paige Smith, Mesquite 4-H (her brother Justin had the Grand Champion Steer this year).
Kayla Muckleroy, Jourdanton FFA, exhibited the 2012 Reserve Grand Champion Swine, which brought a price of $6,950 at auction.
This year’s Reserve Grand Champion Lamb was shown by Michael Klumb, Jourdanton FFA. The animal sold at auction for $4,000.
The 2012 Reserve Grand Champion Goat was sold at auction by exhibitor Kloe Burris, Jourdanton FFA, for $6,525.
Leming/ Verdi 4-H member Nathan Bosquez exhibited her 2012 Reserve Grand Champion Broilers, which sold at auction for $3,800.
Jack Riggs, Jourdaanton FFA, sold his 2012 Reserve Grand Champion Turkey at auction for $4,350.
There was not an auction for the 2012 Reserve Grand Champion Rabbits. Please see the photos of the winners and their buyers in the Farm & Ranch section, pages 9-11C.
Buyers make the difference
Every auction’s success comes from the generosity and support of the community — the buyers.
There were a large number of buyers to bid in support of the county’s youthful exhibitors. The bidding area was full and many of the buyers formed groups to combine their bid money and bid as one buyer to increase the amount of the sale – and stretch each buyer’s bidding power.
This bidding technique at the sale provides an opportunity for buyers to spread their funds among several exhibitors while working with people from other groups and businesses represented.
Then, as bidding got underway, groups and individuals joined together – adding even more buying power – which helps provide funds for the 4-H and FFA members auctioning their animals.
Through these efforts, each exhibitor who auctioned their animal received no less than $1,000.
