HALL | COURTESY PHOTO Everyone wanted to be a Box Top VIP when they walked into the cafeteria on Thursday, Nov. 10, and saw the Pleasanton Eagles Football Captain, Luke Walters, and select teammates and cheerleaders waiting to have lunch with them.

The November Elementary Box Top VIPs were chosen by drawing names. One lucky student per classroom was drawn from all who brought in Box Tops by the Oct. 15 deadline. The third and fourth grade VIPs were loaded with questions as they all sat down to enjoy a delicious lunch of tacos served with the cafeteria’s special hot sauce. Lively discussions and lots of laughter were bouncing around the table as the High School leaders were quizzed on favorite cartoons, colors, and pizza toppings. Lunch usually becomes a race for many, to finish eating and get out the door to the playground; however, today the VIPs and guests were taking their time.

When they were done eating, Luke Walters, Justin Llamas, Joseph Sotello, Daniel Turner, Zachary Brooks, and cheerleaders, Haley Wendel and Judy Garcia strolled outside to play foursquare and jump rope with the kids. The fourth graders playing foursquare really rose to the challenge and took on the high school celebrities with a bold sense of competition. Poor guys didn’t stand a chance! The fourth graders took no prisoners as the high school football players were sent quickly to the back of the line, time and again. The playground emptied out as the kids said their good-byes and all went back to class. The High School celebrities had done a marvelous job of making the VIPs feel special. Some even ate twice to accom- modate eating with both third and fourth graders.

The story doesn’t end there, because then, when all alone and waiting for their ride, something truly heartwarming happened. No electronic devices were consulted, no emergency texts to send, they just kept playing…with each other. Someone picked up the ball and started a round of foursquare. The others jumped rope and laughed, savoring the small window of carefree time in the sunshine, on a beautiful crisp fall afternoon. These young adults are an asset to the Pleasanton High School and a credit to their parents and the community they live in.

Thank you to all involved in making this VIP lunch happen. Please save your Box Tops and give them to your local school. We need more days like today.
