ESL Family Night
The event was coordinated by second grade teachers: Brandi Burkett, Celia Chapa and Parent Liaison Terrie Echigo. It truly was a group effort, first grade teachers Kara Steel and Candi Burkett were even on-hand to assist with childcare!
The evening began with a warm welcome from Ms. Echigo and the Special Programs Director, Allison Rentfro. Parents were encouraged to maintain their child’s first language while learning English as a second language. The meeting continued with the opportunity for parents to ask questions, make comments or voice concerns regarding their child’s education. The parents then observed Brandi Burkett as she read and modeled before/during/ after questions to help with comprehension skills.
Ms. Chapa explained the importance of reading on a daily basis and clarified how the students are placed on a reading level. She also discussed strategies for decoding unknown words. Ms. Echigo translated the information in Spanish. Parents then selected books to take home. The meeting ended with parents completing the Primary Parent Survey.
If you are interested in attending parent involvement sessions or want to know how you can volunteer on your child’s campus, call or email Allison L. Rentfro, Special Programs Director at 569-1247 or email firstname.lastname@example.org .
Refreshments were served and parents had the opportunity to get acquainted.
