Let’s go bowling with Bruiser the Bear

I may bleed Burnt Orange, but I cannot help but be disappointed on how the Texas Longhorns played against the Baylor Bears. As the season came to an end, a 7-5 finish is two games better than a 5-7 finish; but for Texas, it is simply not acceptable. Here is a news flash for Texas Head Coach Mack Brown; you have one year left to turn things around; or retirement will come a lot earlier than expected.
The Baylor Bears were impressive to say the least under Heisman hopeful Robert Griffin III. It will be exciting to see Baylor come to San Antonio for the 2011 Alamo Bowl against the Washington Huskies. One thing I hope, is South Texas supports the Baylor Bears just like they would if Texas A&M or the University of Texas was in town. It is sad to see a team full of talent struggle to sell out a stadium that only holds about 50,000 people. Let’s hope that the Alamo Dome is full of 65,000 in a game that could feature the 2011 Heisman winner.
In other college football bowl game news, to no one’s surprise we will have an SEC re-match between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the LSU Tigers. What a crowd will be on hand in the Louisiana Superdome for this National Title game. This stadium will be of course, in the Tigers back yard and just steps away from the state of Alabama. Although it could be another low scoring defensive battle; in the end this is the game most of the nation probably wanted to see again. Sorry Oklahoma State, I still think you deserved to be there; but you cannot control those three letters: BCS.
On a sad note, I will most likely be missing my first University of Texas College Bowl game since 2003. I cannot force myself to make a 22 hour trip out to San Diego to watch the Horns take on California. Yes, there is a team in California besides USC and UCLA. They are called the Cal Bears, but this match-up doesn’t really interest me. I have been to the Holiday Bowl twice to watch Texas-Washington State and Texas-Arizona State. Other Bowl games I have attended include: Texas-LSU (Cotton Bowl), Texas-Washington State (Holiday Bowl), Texas-Michigan (Rose Bowl), Texas-USC(National Championship at Rose Bowl), Texas-Iowa (Alamo Bowl), Texas-Arizona State (Holiday Bowl), Texas-Ohio State (Arizona State) and Texas-Alabama (National Title-Rose Bowl).
Most likely, you will be able to find me at the Alamo Dome for the Baylor game. I will support Baylor against the Huskies!
In the high school world, the Devine Warhorses saw their season come to an end at the helm of # 3 Wimberley. The Horses came up short against a bigger, stronger and faster Wimberley team who advances to the State Semi-Finals. It was great to see 10,000+ people on hand at Comalandar Stadium last Saturday night in San Antonio. It was awesome to see fans from all over South Texas from Floresville to Uvalde to Laredo and even Comfort on hand for the contest.
Joseph Sadler came within one catch of breaking a national scoring record, but the late fourth quarter throw was intercepted. In the end, this young man has left quite a legacy. It will be awesome to see what he does in the next phase of his sports career. College coaches from Texas State, TLU, UTSA and Incarnate Word were on hand. It would be awesome if he stayed local to help a local university. It is great to see a young man put small town South Texas football on the map.
The only local schools left in the football race are the Calallen Wildcats in Class 4A, the Steele Knights in Class 5A (Division II) and the Madison Mavericks in Class 5A (Division I). Let’s hope one of the three ends up in Jerry World.
Well, I better get back to my weekly stories so I can get over to see Jourdanton and Pleasanton girls in action. Be sure to check out our website weekly. Each week I hope to add new features and stories on our sports website including exclusive sports videos of Brush Country Athletes in action.
