Squaw Basketball ready to get back on track
The Jourdanton Squaws are excited about the upcoming season, under 3rd year Head Coach Doug Lum. After finishing in 4th place in district last season, Jourdanton is hoping to get back into the playoffs once again this season. Big Red will have plenty of familiar faces back, to try and see this goal is met.
Coach Lum returns to lead the Squaws, as he guided them to a 14-17 overall record last season and a 6-8 district record. While in Jourdanton, Lum has accounted for a 33-28 record, which equals to an overall record of 99-82 as a head coach.
Who is back for Jourdanton? The Jourdanton Squaws are going to return plenty of experience this season. They return the following athletes: Lauren Bowers-Sr.-Point Guard, Ariana Foster-Sr.-Shooting guard, J.T. Stacy-Sr.-Post, Jamie Cooper- Sr.-Post, Tori Bautista-Jr.-Wing, Priya Camacho-Jr.-Guard, Cassandra Reyes-Soph-Wing and Kyana Floyd-Soph-Guard.
Looking forward- This season just like last, the Squaws will be facing teams full of size and strength, which include last year’s three district playoff contenders Poth, Karnes City and George West.
“Our team strength this season should be our quickness. One area we will struggle with is our size,” stated Coach Lum.
Offensively, the Squaws will be running a flex offense and they will be running man-toman defense once again.
The Squaws opened their season with a scrimmage at home against Charlotte and a scrimmage in Poteet.
“We looked o.k. in our scrimmages.
Defensively, I feel we are on track. We have to do a better job offensively. I am proud of my girl’s work ethic thus far. The season will be a long journey and we are just getting focused. We have to be focused and continue to work hard to meet our goals,” added Coach Lum.
Schedule Outlook- The Squaws opened their season on the road on press night against Brooks Academy.
Non-District opponents this season will include dates with Devine, Kenedy, Falls City, Pleasanton, Kenedy and Somerset.
This season, Jourdanton will compete in the Navarro and Poteet Tournaments.
District play will include Poth, Karnes City, George West, Three Rivers, Cotulla and Natalia once again.
The last time the Squaws advanced to the 2A girls basketball playoffs was in the 2009- 2010 season. They fell to the San Diego Lady Vaqueros 39-35 in the Bi-District Playoffs.
