Poteet Basketball excited to get underway
The Poteet Agates are excited to get things rolling, as the 2011-2012 Basketball season has arrived. Poteet led by veteran Head Coach Vernon Marsh once again this season. Experience could be the key to success this season, but stiff competition in district will continue to be a challenge for the Agates.
Coach Vernon Marsh is back as he will begin his 14th season at Poteet and his 25th overall season as head coach.
Last season, the Poteet Agates finished their season with a 7-17 overall record and a 2-12 record in 28-3A. The Agates have not been able to get into the 3A playoffs since 1997.
Who is back for Poteet? The Poteet Agates will only return two starters from last season’s squad, but will have plenty of lettermen back. The following lettermen return: Rose Anna Garcia-Sr.-Guard, Rose Marie Garcia-Sr.-Post, Gabby Garcia- Sr.-Guard, Domonic Lerma- Jr.-Post, Samantha Amaya-Jr.- Guard, and Maggie Flores-Jr.- Guard.
Other players to watch: Bernadette Quintero-Sr.-Post, Lauren Martinez-Sr.-Guard, Lauren Zavala-Soph.-Power Forward, JoAnne Lopez-Sr.-Post, and Detiney Keeling-Jr.-Post.
Looking Forward- This season will be like any other under Coach Marsh in the fact that hard work and dedication will be expected of his team.
According to Marsh, the team strength this season will come with his experienced players who either started or saw varsity time last season. When it comes to a weakness, size and depth will be issues according to Marsh.
The Agates opened their scrimmage action last week as they hosted Three Rivers and Jourdanton on two separate days.
“I thought we looked o.k. during our scrimmages. The girls played hard. We still need a lot of work. Right now we are putting a few new faces in different positions and just trying to find out who can play where. Overall, I think we saw what we wanted to. We got a good fill of what type of team we are going to have. We are going to have a team who will go out and play with a lot of effort every night,” stated Coach Marsh.
According to Marsh, his offense will be based out of a “Motion,Flex” and defensively they will run either a 2-3 zone defense or man-to-man dependent on match-ups.
Schedule Outlook- The Agates opened district play on the road on press night at Three Rivers. On Saturday, November 12th the Agates open up play at home with three games against Navarro beginning at 10: 00 a.m.
Other non-district opponents include: Crystal City, Laredo, Devine, Lytle and Somerset.
The Agates will compete in the Pleasanton Varsity Tournament, the Floresville Varsity Tournament and the home Poteet Tournament.
District play will be just as stiff as last season, as they will face Sam Houston, Gonzales, LaVernia, Yoakum, Pleasanton and Cuero.
Helping Coach Marsh coach this season will be Asst. Coaches Ernest Martinez and Amanda Garcia.
