The Pleasanton Lady Eagles will be guided by a new leader for the 2011-2012 basketball season. After struggling over the past few years under former Coach Scott Jones, Coach Katy Herrera has stated there will be no excuses this season. A great effort is all Herrera is asking, which they are hoping will turn into success.

Coach Katy Herrera has been a part of the Pleasanton Lady Eagle Basketball program for three seasons, as she enters her fourth at the school. Herrera is no stranger to the world of basketball, as she played all of her school career for the Devine Arabians. Herrera was a hard worker and a dedicated player, as Coach Jim Sessions accepted nothing less. Life lessons in high school have carried over for this young coach who doesn’t handle losing easy.

“The girls and I have had a talk and they know the only way to go is up. There is no room for excuses and they know, all I ask from them is to hustle everywhere and to play with their hearts and fight,” stated Coach Herrera.

Last season, the Lady Eagles finished their season with just a 1-11 district 28-3A record. The overall record was not available.

Who is back for Pleasanton? The Pleasanton Lady Eagles will return a number of familiar faces, as well as a few new ones.

Returning for Pleasanton this season are lettermen Allyson Graybill-Sr.-Guard, Kierstyn Dumont-Sr.-Posts, Adrianne Ramos-Sr.-Post, Kimberley Villalobos-Sr.-Post, Ashton Lopez-Jr.-Guard and Jacquelyn Tanner-Jr.-Guard.

Other players to watch for: Sandra Mayhall-Jr.-Post, Jenna Yow-Jr.-Post, Brianna Brooks- Jr.-Guard, Celeste Escalante- Jr.-Guard, Carlee McAskill-Jr.- Guard, Madi Leyva-Jr.-Guard and Jazmyn Arevalo-Jr.-Guard.

Looking forward- According to Coach Katy Herrera, the team strength this season will be experience. As far as a weakness is concerned, Herrera stated it would be her teams defense.

The Lady Eagles opened their 2011-2012 season on the road in Bandera last Saturday in a scrimmage.

“The girls showed a lot of positives and hustle. We saw what we need to work on. We will be facing some tougher teams this year in order to get us prepared for our district. Our experienced players will be a big positive and I am excited about our reserves. They all know what is expected of them,” stated Coach Katy Herrera.

The Pleasanton Lady Eagles have not advanced to the high school girls basketball playoffs since the 1996-1997 season.

Schedule Outlook- The Lady Eagles opened non-district play on press night against S.A. Hawkins.

Non-District games are scheduled against: Pearsall, Cornerstone, Falls City, Devine, Nixon-Smiley, Jourdanton, Lytle and Center Point.

Pleasanton will compete in their home Tournament, the Karnes City Tourney and the Poteet Tournament.

District play will include games against LaVernia, Yoakum, Gonzales, Sam Houston, Cuero and Poteet once again.

It will be interesting to see if fresh blood will help turn the ship for the Pleasanton Lady Eagle Basketball program.

Assisting Coach Herrera will be JV Coach Bob Rentfro and Freshmen Coach Abby Rains.
